The lifespan of a squid is uncertain, ranging from five to thirty years. Larvae are so small, equal to the size of a pinhead. As soon as the eggs hatch, larvae are formed. It can take between 20 to 60 days for the eggs to hatch. However, unlike many other animals, the female squid doesn’t care for her eggs from that point onwards. Then, when the right time comes, the female squid uses this sperm to fertilize eggs.įemale squids lay their eggs on the ocean floor or attach them to seaweed. Reproduction occurs when the male squid places sperm into the female squid’s mantle.įemale squids can save these eggs for later use. It is also a way to camouflage themselves from predators and let other squids know of the danger. Squids also can alter their appearance by changing colors and patterns in their bodies. Squids come in various colors: black, white, brown, and gray. Its arms and tentacles have suckers to help them grab onto their prey. Its arms and tentacles are attached to its head at one end of the mantle. Some have long fins extending the whole length of the body, whereas some have small fins at just one end. Again, the fins can vary based on species. The squid uses fins on either side of the mantle to move through the water. Two large eyes on either side of the head provide a 360 view of the squid. Another fun fact is that some squids have ten arms! Squids have three hearts and are one of the few animals with multiple hearts. It is because female vampire squids don’t die soon after laying eggs like females of the other species.
